The plugin seem to be adding more than just eq, it seems like they also add some depth to certain frequencies to make them more tame or smoother or have more silibence. Yes it is a nice LDC that is flat that reproduces and flat signal for you to alter. So it's alot of reamping it seems but digital which isn't a problem it's just seems like a bit too much. ![]() Mic->pre->apollopre->apolloemulation->daw->slate digital mic emulation The only con I don't really like is the signal routing if your using a setup like the studio I was at. With the Apollo emulations it still sounded great. The mic itself is its own character very very transparent especially with the slate preamp they made. ![]() The slate mic emulations sound great with it. It a nice microphone with how flat it is. They also had the mic going into the vms preamp before the Apollo but it was bypassed. They had it going into an Apollo twin using a voxbox emulation and la2a emulation for the unison. I've used the slate mic in a few sessions at one studio. ![]() (also, I would argue that no matter how good a microphone is, if the performance is bad then it's going to be tough to make the end result salvageable) I'm getting thousands of targeted ads from Slate Digital for their 'Virtual Microphone' unit, and while I'm definitely not going to spend $600 on the unit, I'm intrigued from the engineering POV as to how this functions.Īre they simply selling an LDC with a relatively flat response, and then applying the same shape of frequency response as an EQ to the mic within the plugin itself? If so, this is a big fat scam since anyone can find the frequency response of a 47 and dial that in their DAW.Īnyone who owns the unit and knows a bit more may be able to shed some light on this, as I'm sure others in the community are at least somewhat skeptical of the capabilities of this Microphone emulating some classic microphones. I've been subscribed to Slate Digital for 6 months and use the virtual mix rack on most of my mixes, I think their emulations sound great and add nice saturation, but I do think that as a company they're really trying to grab as much cash from the more inexperienced engineers who are likely to fall for snake oil marketing campaigns.
